Farhad Karim is a Partner in Simpson Thacher & Bartlett's Real Estate Department. He has represented the world’s leading real estate private equity funds in complex domestic and cross-border real estate acquisitions, joint ventures, financings, and restructurings. He has been actively involved with all major classes of real estate including office buildings, hotels, residential and student housing, health care clinics, retirement homes, and logistics facilities as well as with the acquisition and restructuring of performing and non-performing loan facilities in Europe, Asia, and North America.
Recent transactions on which Mr. Karim has advised include the representation of affiliates of The Blackstone Group in connection with the acquisition of a 50% interest in the Broadgate Estate (5 million square foot office portfolio, covering 30 acres in the City of London); the acquisition of Hilton Hotel Corporation; the acquisition of a retail complex in Shanghai; a joint venture with an Indian property development company; the syndication of interests in the Vitus Group which owns a portfolio of 31,000 apartments in Germany; the acquisition and financing of over 100 hotels in a series of investments in Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany Italy, Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland; and the disposition of fifty office buildings leased by Deutsche Bank throughout western Europe. He also represented Hilton in a joint venture to develop new hotels in the United Kingdom, Center Parcs UK in a major refinancing, and TDC (Denmark’s largest telecom company) in a sale-leaseback of 225 commercial properties in Denmark. In addition, Mr. Karim has represented Morgan Stanley’s Real Estate Fund, AIG, Westbrook Partners, the Carlyle Group, JER Real Estate Fund, JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank, Princeton University, General Motors Corporation, and Hershey Foods.
Mr. Karim joined Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP in 1998. He received his B.A. from McGill University and both his J.D. and a Masters of International Affairs from Columbia University.
