The Diversity Committee leads the Firm’s diversity efforts. The Diversity Committee is chaired by Victoria B. Bjorklund, a department chair who has mentored dozens of women and minority lawyers, and John W. Carr, a senior corporate partner and the ranking Black partner at the Firm. The Diversity Committee is composed of 26 members, including partners who are Black, Asian, Latino, and openly gay and lesbian. Three members of the Firm’s Executive Committee are committee members, to ensure full participation of the Firm’s senior leadership in our diversity efforts. Natalia Martín, a former Associate Dean at Yale Law School and the Firm’s Director of Diversity, works closely with the Diversity Committee and with attorneys throughout the Firm on diversity initiatives.
While the Firm believes that diversity must be promoted every day at work through the development of individual attorneys, the fostering of mentoring relationships, and the creation of an inclusive community, the Firm also offers several programs and benefits to our attorneys.
Diversity Mentoring Program. The Diversity Committee manages a Diversity Mentoring Program through which approximately 50 partners and counsel serve as mentors to minority lawyers who opt to participate in this program. Diversity mentors are tasked with informally monitoring the career progress of one or two associate mentees. Diversity mentors and mentees may work together on cases or deals, or may have less formal contact. Diversity mentors are available to serve as a resource and sounding board for diversity associates’ workplace concerns and questions. We believe that this program enables us to provide a better work experience for participants, and we view it as a unique opportunity to learn from our diverse associates about issues of importance to them.
Affinity Groups. The Firm actively supports activities designed to foster support networks for lawyers with communities of interest within the firm, including Black, Asian, Latino/a, and LGBT lawyers. Our Women’s Committee also coordinates events for women lawyers at the Firm.
Benefits. The Firm’s health insurance plan extends to domestic partners. In addition, the Firm offers new parents 18 weeks of paid primary caregiver leave and four weeks paid secondary caregiver leave for births or adoptions. Click here for more information.
